چکیده

This paper presents an enhanced sonic data communication method using TAPIR (Theoretically Audible, but Practically Inaudible Range: frequencies above 18kHz) sound and a software toolkit as its implementation. Using inaudible sound as a data medium, a digital data network among the audience and performer can be easily built with microphones and speakers, without requiring any additional hardware. “TAPIR Sound Tag” is a smart device framework for inaudible data communication that can be easily embedded in audience participatory performances and interactive arts, by enabling peer-to-peer or broadcasting real-time data communication among smart devices. The developed toolkit can be used without any advanced knowledge in signal processing and communication system theory; simply specifying carrier frequency and bandwidth with a few lines of code can start data communication. Several usage scenarios of the system are also presented, such as participating in an interactive performance by adding and controlling sound, and collaborative completion of an artist’s work by audience. We expect this framework to provide a new way of audience interaction to artists, as well as further promoting audience participation by simplifying the process: using personal smart devices as a medium and not requiring additional hardware or complex settings.

Sonically Augmented Artifacts: Design Methodology Through Participatory Workshops

Participatory workshops have been organized within the framework of the ANR project Legos that concerns gesture-sound interactive systems. These workshops addressed both theoretical issues and experimentation with prototypes. The first goal was to stimulate new ideas related to the control of everyday objects using sound feedback, and then, to create and experiment with new sonic augmented obje...

Data Auditorio: Towards Intense Interaction, an Interactive Hyper-Directional Sound for Play and Ubiquity

This paper presents the playful and ubiquitous interaction of sound: intense interaction. It aims to realise, in other words, an interactive sound produced in a certain space. It enables audience to participate in a game called performance play (e.g. playing piano, playing music, being a play actor, etc.) in order to significantly change and overcome the existing patterns of reality in the spac...

Creative Participation for Audiences of Live Music Performances

udience participation in musical performances can be manifested in many ways, from a receiver sense (sitting in silent contemplation of sounds, for example) to a more active form of participation involving physical actions contributing to the performance (singing along with musicians, for example). We consider the latter to be creative participation. Note that we’re not referring to creative pa...

Experio: a Design for Novel Audience Participation in Club Settings

When looking at modern music club settings, especially in the area of electronic music, music is consumed in a unidirectional way on a sound engineering level – from DJ or producer to the audience – with little direct means to influence and participate. In this paper we challenge this phenomenon and aim for a new bond between the audience and the DJ through the creation of an interactive dance ...
